This month has already seen the streaming giant add some of the best titles to its library, with even more to come before the final day of 2025. The next few weeks will also see a few unforgettable classics and influential productions exit from Netflix, some of which you're certainly not expecting. Among this list is one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, from over four decades ago and directed by the prolific Steven Spielberg.
Theatrically released in the U.S. on June 11, 1982, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is widely regarded as one of the greatest gifts to modern pop culture. Sadly, time is running out to enjoy the masterpiece, as the last full day to watch the sci-fi flick on Netflix is on November 30, 2025, meaning it won't be available to subscribers nationwide from December 1. Besides directing E.T., Spielberg produced, while Melissa Mathison wrote the screenplay with Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore starring.
As fans of E.T. already know, the sci-fi gem tells a riveting story about a boy, Elliott (Thomas), who discovers and befriends an "extraterrestrial" that he names E.T., who has been stranded on Earth. Bringing his new friend into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T. to his brother Michael (MacNaughton) and his little sister, Gertie (Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.
'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' Is One Film Everyone Must Watch!
E.T. became both a smashing hit at the box office as well as a favorite among critics upon its release. Its total earnings exceed $797 million against a $10.5 million budget, making it Universal's 15th-highest-grossing film worldwide. At the time of its theatrical run, it surpassed 1977's Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, a record it held for eleven years until Spielberg's own Jurassic Park dethroned it in 1993. That's not all! E.T. won a boatload of awards, including multiple Oscars and Golden Globes, while on Rotten Tomatoes it boasts a near-perfect 99% rating from critics who describe the "exciting sci-fi adventure" as "a piece of movie magic for young and old."
Check out E.T. on Netflix before it departs on December 1. Follow Collider for more updates on what's leaving the streamer.
