Netflix subscribers missing You must check out the streamer's latest scandalous thriller series, The Beast in Me. Starring Penn Badgley as charming and amorous serial killer Joe Goldberg, You aired its series finale earlier this year after five incredible seasons, leaving a huge void in the TV thriller genre.
Enter, The Beast in Me. While You was predominantly full of breakout talent, the incredible cast of The Beast in Me is full of veteran TV actors. The series stars Claire Danes as Aggie Wiggs, an author grappling with the loss of her young son. When real estate titan Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys) moves into the mansion next door, Aggie develops an obsession with him and longs to find out his deadly secrets.
The Beast In Me's Moody, Literary Atmosphere Is Perfect For Thriller Fans
While You's five seasons see Joe constantly relocating, The Beast in Me is entirely set in a fictional suburb of Oyster Bay, New York. This setting becomes its own character, as, much like Aggie herself, her home is falling apart on the inside, and due to not having worked in a long time, Aggie is unable to make the necessary repairs.
While Aggie's house could definitely be described as palatial, it looks like a hovel compared to the opulent mansion Nile and his second wife, Nina (Brittany Snow), move into. These juxtaposing homes provide the perfect battleground for Aggie and Nile to play their cat-and-mouse game.
Aggie is immediately fascinated by Nile, as he's not only a notorious figure in New York real estate, but he's also widely believed to have killed his first wife, Madison (Leila George), though he was never charged with a crime. Nile's presence in Aggie's life gives her much-needed inspiration for her second book, and she becomes desperate to learn the truth about him and what really happened to Madison.
A gripping, moody location combined with a literary bent will be catnip to most You fans. The Penn Badgley series begins with Joe working as a bookseller and falling for a writer. You season 5 sees Joe return to his beloved shop, this time as its owner. The object of his affection, Brontê (Madeline Brewer), is another writer, one who wants to find out and expose the truth about Joe, making her incredibly similar to Aggie.
Why The Beast In Me Is An Even Better Netflix Thriller Than You
Aggie (Claire Danes) sitting in her office in The Beast In Me
While Joe Goldberg's ability to get away with his many murders makes sense given his good looks, privilege, and status, by the time we get to season 5, the character begins to feel a little overpowered. As great as You is, the audience is ready to see Joe get brought to justice once and for all.
Luckily, that justice is indeed served courtesy of Brontê. Much of You season 5's second half is seen through Brontê's perspective, and it's a breath of fresh air after spending so many episodes trapped in Joe's sordid mind. In retrospect, it shows how much better You might have been if it allowed for more of Joe's partners to get their own POVs.
For those who were left wanting more Brontê, Kate, and Marienne, The Beast in You is the perfect watch. Like most of Claire Danes' best roles, Aggie is messy, unpredictable, and even unlikable at times. However, her dogged determination to find out the truth about a man whose power and affluence could have very well allowed him to get away with murder makes this thriller, well, thrilling.
The Beast in Me is also a miniseries, making the storytelling taut and tense. It's very difficult to sustain a thriller story across multiple seasons, and while You did a great job of it, The Beast in Me is tighter overall. It's truly a must-watch for any thriller fan.
