The Running Man was expected to top the domestic charts in its debut last weekend, but it ended up coming second to fellow newcomer Now You See Me: Now You Don't. The underperformance was slightly unexpected, considering the flashy marketing and all the heat that Powell has had on him over the last few months. One week later, the movie is eyeing a single-digit haul, once again trailing Now You See Me 3 and also the record-breaking Wicked: For Good, which grossed a humongous $70 million on opening day.
That said, The Running Man is poised to overtake the 1987 adaptation of King's source novel, which was published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym in 1982. The original film, headlined by Arnold Schwarzenegger, ended its global run with $38 million. The new film is also expected to pass the $46 million lifetime global haul of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, which was released in 1980 and remains a sore sticking point for King. While the rest of the world now considers The Shining to be among the best horror movies of all time, King was famously dissatisfied by Kubrick's adaptation, going on to make a rival television limited series some years later. Of course, The Shining's $46 million haul is unadjusted for inflation, which means that this number would be considerably higher according to modern exchange rates. In simpler terms, more people watched The Shining in its original run than have watched The Running Man now.
Reviews for 'The Running Man' Haven't Been Spectacular
Directed by Edgar Wright, the movie was produced on a reported budget of $110 million, and is facing direct heat from the holdover hit, Predator: Badlands. The Running Man opened to solid (if not spectacular) reviews — it's currently sitting at a 65% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes — unlike this year's last King adaptation, the similarly themed The Long Walk, which continues to lead it at the box office. You can watch the film in theaters while you wait for a special IMAX re-release of The Shining next month. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
