Two weeks into its theatrical run, Nuremberg is desperately trying to stay afloat amid major competition. At this point, the movie is playing like a counter-programmer for older audiences, while women flock to Wicked: For Good and the younger male demographic chooses between The Running Man, Predator: Badlands, and Now You See Me: Now You Don't. Nuremberg follows the trial of Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring, who's played by Russell Crowe. His performance was met with near-unanimous praise, although the reception for the film itself has been slightly muted. Audiences, however, seem to be enjoying it, and have awarded it a terrific 96% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. They're going to have to keep turning out to theaters to watch the movie, now that it's facing direct heat from this week's new release, Sisu: Road to Revenge.

With over $10 million at the domestic box office, Nuremberg will overtake the lifetime domestic haul of the all-time classic World War II submarine movie Das Boot this weekend. The West German film was released to widespread acclaim in 1981, although it was only given a domestic release in 1982. The nearly $11 million that it ended up grossing, remarkably, came from just two theaters. Nuremberg, by comparison, played in nearly 2,000 locations for the first two weeks of its run. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who'd go on to make Hollywood tent poles such as Troy, Air Force One, and The Perfect Storm, Das Boot has been re-released in several formats over the years, and has earned $85 million globally.

'Nuremberg' Has Been Embraced by Its Target Audience

Petersen earned Oscar nods in the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories for his work on the movie, which earned six nods in total at the 55th Academy Awards. It holds a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Taut, breathtakingly thrilling, and devastatingly intelligent, Das Boot is one of the greatest war films ever made." Directed by James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg is currently sitting at a 71% score on RT, with a consensus that reads, "Driven by a commanding performance from Russell Crowe, Nuremberg is a handsomely crafted historical drama, but its measured pacing and emotional restraint keep it from fully realizing the complexity of its subject." Also starring Rami Malek, Leo Woodall, Colin Hanks, and Michael Shannon, the movie is playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
