Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the start of a fresh chapter for Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I'm convinced that the Marvel hero of a box office bomb that became a Netflix hit would be perfect for its story. Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cast is shaping up to be one of the MCU's best.
Aside from Holland as Spider-Man, Mark Ruffalo returns as the Hulk, with Jon Bernthal making his MCU movie debut as the Punisher, and stars like Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and more appearing. After the MCU's first Spider-Man trilogy ended with a major multiverse event, the next Spider-Man movie is street-level, making one character perfect for it.
This Sony Marvel Movie Became A Global Netflix Hit
Despite its name, Sony's Spider-Man Universe never featured a version of Spider-Man. Instead, the studio chose to focus on Spider-Man villains and supporting characters. That led to a few box office bombs, one of which was Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter, which put up $61.9 million at the worldwide box office. However, Kraven was successful elsewhere.
Perhaps due to its low theatrical turnout, Kraven the Hunter was avidly watched by audiences when it debuted on Netflix last year. Not only did the movie trend worldwide when it arrived on the streaming service, but the Sony movie focusing on a Marvel character had legs. According to a Bloomberg report, Kraven the Hunter was Sony's 5th most-watched movie on Netflix in 2024.
Kraven The Hunter Was Almost An MCU Spider-Man Villain

The streaming success of Taylor-Johnson's Spider-Man villain reminded me of what we almost had. Kraven was at one point imagined for Spider-Man: No Way Home. According to the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios book, Kraven "was unavailable until Sony established him in a solo movie," which was the SSU film starring Taylor-Johnson.
Kraven the Hunter was considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home because Marvel did not know if they would be able to lock down all the multiverse returns. So, in case Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield said no to returning as their versions of Spider-Man, the MCU could have put Holland's Spider-Man against Kraven the Hunter. However, Sony blocked that backup plan.
Why Kraven The Hunter Is Perfect For Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven looking serious in Kraven the Hunter
With Kraven the Hunter now established in his solo movie and the SSU dead, there should be no roadblocks pertaining to his inclusion in future MCU Spider-Man movies. Kraven would be perfect for Spider-Man: Brand New Day's story, which is once again street-level, not multiversal. He would fit in nicely with confirmed villains like Scorpion and Tombstone.
Additionally, Taylor-Johnson's Kraven is a brutal fighter like Jon Bernthal's Punisher. He could also view Mark Ruffalo's Hulk as the perfect target for a hunt, offering his biggest challenge to date. Marvel could either bring in the SSU Kraven through the multiverse or have Taylor-Johnson play a different version of the character, the MCU's, in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
