Netflix continues to see significant success with licensed movies and TV shows. The streaming juggernaut started availing past shows from other networks and services, and some of those shows have seen massive viewership. Laura Linney starred in the 2010 Showtime comedy The Big C, which recently debuted on Netflix. Less than a week after its debut, the series is one of the most-watched on the platform, rising on Netflix's top ten streaming chart according to Flix Patrol. The dramedy is a huge hit in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, the latter where it's the fifth-most-popular show at the time of writing.
The Big C debuted on the cable network Showtime on August 16, 2010, and ran for four seasons until May 20, 2013. Linney stars as Cathy Jamison, a suburban mom who gets a terminal melanoma cancer diagnosis. The diagnosis changes her perspective on life as she initially decides to keep it to herself. The dramedy also stars Oliver Platt (Chicago Med) as Paul Jamison, Cathy's husband; Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent) as Adam, Cathy's son; John Benjamin Hickey (Manhattan) as Sean; Gabourey Sidibe (American Horror Story) as Andrea; and Phyllis Somerville (Outsiders) as Marlene. Cynthia Nixon, Hugh Dancy, Boyd Holbrook, Susan Sarandon, Idris Elba, Lee Tergesen, and Hamish Linklater guest star in various episodes.
What Else Is Trending on Netflix?
The global Netflix top ten chart is dominated mainly by Netflix Originals, with the new Shogun and Squid Game mashup, The Last Samurai Standing, topping the list. It is followed by Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys' thriller The Beast in Me. Dynamite Kiss, The Crystal Cuckoo, As You Stood By, The Witcher, 50 Seconds: The Fernando Baez Case, and Delhi Crime complete the list of currently popular Netflix Originals. The British crime drama Absentia is once again thrilling viewers with its twists and turns, eight years after its debut. The wrestling series Raw also appears on the chart.
On the film side, Guillermo del Toro's blockbuster Frankenstein is the top movie for the second week in a row. The animated film In Your Dreams comes in second. Christmas is getting close, as evidenced by A Merry Little Ex-Mas, a Netflix Original Christmas movie. Christmas Under the Northern Lights is another popular season-themed movie appearing on the list. The rest consists of a mix of genres and formats, with The Little Things, The Family Stone, KPop Demon Hunters, Mango, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Jolly LLB 3 completing the film list.
