Colleen Hoover finally breaks her silence regarding Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively's ongoing legal battle. The author behind It Ends With Us revealed that she felt very "disappointed."

In an interview with Elle, Hoover explained how she felt like Lively and Baldoni's feud had obliterated the purpose of her book and the film adaptation she co-produced. She said that it was especially disheartening considering the fact that this book was based on her own mother's experiences with domestic violence and that the two lead actors in the film essentially turned something that was meant to spread awareness about abuse into a "circus."

The author stated that the whole incident made her feel almost too scared to tell people that she was the one who wrote It Ends With Us because of all the bad press it has received. “I feel like [the lawsuit] has overshadowed it. I’m almost embarrassed to say I wrote it. When people ask what I do, I’m just like, ‘I’m a writer. Please don’t ask me what I wrote.’”

Hoover revealed why it took her so long to speak out about Lively and Baldoni's legal battle. She said that she wanted to stay out of the mess that they created. She said that she has her own side of the story to tell, but she won't because she doesn't want to attack other people to make herself look good. She added that she would prefer not to address it and just let outsiders say whatever they want to say about it.

I’m just trying to stay removed from the negativity. I have my own story I could tell … but I don’t want to bring attention to it, and I don’t want to have to put someone else down to lift myself up. So I’d rather just ignore it and let people think and say what they’re going to say. I feel like it’s so big at this point that there’s nothing anyone can say to change whatever opinion people have of it, even though no one has the actual truth. Not even me.

The lawsuit has also taken a toll on Hoover's mother and the way they both view the book now. The author even boldly claimed that she believed the backlash the film adaptation of It Ends With Us received affected her mom more than her biological father did.

The book was inspired by her story, and now it gives us PTSD to think about it. I feel awful because I almost feel like she’s gone through more with the aftermath of this film, more pain than she went through with my dad, just seeing the ugliness of it.

It Ends With Us is now available to stream on Netflix.
