The G League's OKC Blue mounted a 21-point comeback in a 129-127 OT win over the Texas Legends on Friday. The road victory improved their record to 2-4 in the regular season.
It was a night of double-digit comebacks for both OKC teams. In this version, the Blue fell behind fast and early. They were in a 43-31 pickle after the first quarter. The Legends couldn't miss from either the outside or the inside.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThings weren't looking pretty. But the Blue slowly got back into it. Viktor Lahkin's layup gave OKC the go-ahead 56-55 lead with a little over three minutes left in the second frame. OKC scored 31 points in the second quarter to make it a brand-new ballgame.
The Blue entered halftime in a small 65-62 hole to the Legends. Considering how things started, you'll take that.
And then all of that momentum was lost. After the break, the Legends dropped 41 points in the third frame. The Blue trailed by double-digit deficits and flirted with a 20-point hole. They were down 106-88 after the third quarter. That should've been it. Instead, they hung around.
After Zhaire Smith's layup put Texas up 113-97 with seven minutes left, the Blue went on a 14-2 run. That made it a 115-111 contest with three minutes left. Clutch time. Dariq Whitehead and Malevy Leons made back-to-back outside jumpers. OKC suddenly had a 119-118 lead with 1:12 left.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter Leons put the Blue up 122-120 with four seconds left at the free-throw line, Dalano Blanton returned the favor. He was fouled on their final possession. He made both free throws. Tied at 122 points apiece, we went into overtime. OKC scored 34 points in the fourth frame to make that reality.
As is the case in the G League, the first to seven points wins in overtime. Both teams went back and forth to start. Whitehead made another outside jumper to make it 127 points apiece. And then Brooks Barnhizer sealed it with two made free throws.
The Blue shot 46% from the field and went 11-of-42 (26.2%) from 3. They shot 13-of-21 on free throws. They had 42 assists on 50 baskets. Six Blue players scored double-digit points.
Meanwhile, the Legends shot 48% from the field and went 19-of-34 (55.9%) from 3. They shot 17-of-24 on free throws. They had 25 assists on 41 baskets. Five Legends players scored double-digit points.
