Chad Powers' fate has been decided at Hulu. The sports comedy series stars Glen Powell as a former college quarterback named Russ Holliday who disgraced himself. He pretends to be an individual named Chad Powers so he can recapture his college football glory days, even going so far as wearing prosthetics for his disguise as a walk-on quarterback for the South Georgia Catfish.
Now, Hulu has announced that Chad Powers is renewed for season 2, with Powell confirmed to be returning as the titular character. The official renewal comes more than a month after the season 1 finale was released on October 28.
Created by Powell and Michael Waldron, the series is inspired by ESPN and Omaha Productions' "Eli's Places" segment, which featured Eli Manning disguised in prosthetics while participating in walk-on tryouts for Penn State University's football team.
In addition to Powell, season 1's cast includes Steven Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson, Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, and Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny. Powell and Waldron, along with Eli and Peyton Manning, are producers for the series.
Critics gave mixed reviews to Chad Powers, leading to a 57% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant's Ben Sherlock notes in his review that "The humor doesn’t always land, the storytelling plays it a bit too safe, and Russ/Chad is the only character who feels fully fleshed out and distinctively drawn." With an 84% Popcornmeter score, audiences had a more favorable reaction to the show.
Previously, Chad Powers' creators discussed their three-season plan with ScreenRant, sharing that "what we want to do is at least two more [seasons]" while acknowledging that it is "not a premise we can stretch for 15 seasons."
They also revealed that Chad Powers season 2 will "see the Catfish through this season of college football" and "pick up right after" the "midpoint of the football season." Now that season 2 is officially happening, the series can follow through on this plan.
In the season 1 finale, Ricky learns about Chad actually being Russ, but she hasn't revealed his secret yet. Season 2 will need to address whether she exposes his identity or keeps it under wraps as the football season continues for the Catfish. It remains to be seen if Coach Hudson or any other characters learn the truth, and what this would mean for Russ/Chad.
Along with Chad Powers, Powell recently starred in Edgar Wright's adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man. He also stars in A24's upcoming dark comedy film How to Make a Killing alongside Margaret Qualley, Ed Harris, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, and Topher Grace. Powell plays Beckett Redfellow, who intends to kill his wealthy relatives in order to claim the family inheritance.
