Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, and although he’s starred in plenty of action movies, his library of sci-fi hits isn’t as large as you might think. The first movies that come to mind when you think of Tom Cruise might be Mission: Impossible or Top Gun, but the action star has teamed with directors like Steven Spielberg, Doug Liman, and Joseph Kosinski for three certified sci-fi classics. The best of them all, Edge of Tomorrow, first hit theaters in 2014, and the film is once again dominating streaming as more sci-fi fans around the world discover its greatness.

Edge of Tomorrow, which also stars Emily Blunt, has been hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. It earned strong scores of 91% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $381 million at the global box office against a $175 million budget. The film tells the story of a man who is forced to relive the same day over and over again upon his death, but while doing so, he unlocks the key to defeating the alien invasion that threatens to destroy the earth.

Christopher McQuarrie wrote the script for Edge of Tomorrow with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. Cruise and McQuarrie have become frequent collaborators on the Mission: Impossible franchise and other blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick. Doug Liman directed Edge of Tomorrow, marking the first time he worked with Tom Cruise. The duo later reunited for the 2017 true crime thriller, American Made, and they’re even in the early stages of development on a new sci-fi movie that aims to be the first film to shoot in outer space.

Will ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ Ever Happen?

Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has confirmed that Warner Bros. is constantly asking him about making a sequel to the sci-fi masterpiece, but that he just hasn’t figured out the story yet. Some fans have pushed back on the notion that Edge of Tomorrow needs a sequel, saying that the first movie is a perfect ending to the story. Still, with the high demand for Edge of Tomorrow 2, Warner Bros. will certainly try to figure out how to make it happen.
