Emilia Clarke will always be famous for her star-making role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but she’s trading Westeros for Moscow in her new series, which just got an exciting first look. Clarke has been tapped to star alongside Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus) in Ponies, the new murder-mystery series set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the 1970s. Set in Moscow, the series follows two secretaries at the American embassy who become CIA operatives after their husbands are killed. Peacock has released the first three images from the show, which will premiere on January 15.
Adrian Lester has also been cast in Ponies, and he can be seen alongside Richardson in one of the first-look images. The show was written and created for TV by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, who both executive produce alongside star Clarke. Clarke previously earned her first producing credit on The Pod Generation, the 2023 dystopian sci-fi film in which she co-stars with Chiwetel Ejiofor, which is currently streaming on Hulu. She later earned another credit for the animated family musical The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland. She has a lead voice role in the series alongside Gerard Butler.
Clarke first broke out thanks to her role in all eight seasons of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series, but similar to some of her co-stars like Kit Harington, she’s escaped the one-role mold with some other big projects. She made her MCU debut in the critically maligned Secret Invasion, which was so poorly received that it may be disregarded from the MCU continuity. The poor reception didn’t fall on Clarke, though, who did a fine job with the material she was given.
Will Emilia Clarke Ever Come Back to 'Game of Thrones'?
It’s highly unlikely that Emilia Clarke will ever return to Game of Thrones, especially as Daenerys Targaryen, who dies at the end of the show. Since her arc began when she was little more than just a child, everything there is to see from Dany was shown in the eight seasons the series was on the air. Back when there was a Jon Snow sequel series reported to be in development, Clarke was asked if she was interested in returning, and she shut that down swiftly.
Check out the first images from Ponies above, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series.
