Universal and Blumhouse hope Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is another big win at the box office. The studios found more success than imagined with the original film in 2023. Despite releasing simultaneously in theaters and on streaming, Five Nights at Freddy's exceeded box office expectations (making $291 million worldwide) and broke streaming viewership records.
That level of success has put pressure on the sequel to deliver once more. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 ups the stakes, increases the animatronic count, and ramps up the scares, all while retaining the PG-13 rating. But with Five Nights at Freddy's 2's streaming release a ways off, the sequel's box office performance is an even bigger deal. Thankfully, it's in a good spot to find success.
Five Nights At Freddy's 2's Budget Explained

One of the reasons the original Five Nights at Freddy's was so successful was that the studios kept the cost down. It only cost $20 million to produce, giving it an incredible return by making over 14x that amount at the box office. Sequels tend to have higher budgets across the board, with bigger scopes, higher pay for the cast, and so on. That made Five Nights at Freddy's 2's cost a significant development to keep an eye on.
Despite some reports that the sequel cost about $50 million to make, Variety has revealed that Five Nights at Freddy's 2's budget is $36 million. Universal and Blumhouse nearly doubled the budget, which is a notable increase. But the overall spending is still much lower than most other franchises or adaptations tend to receive, especially at the PG-13 level.
With a nearly $300 million box office on the original, the studios could have felt comfortable going well above $50 million to increase the action, VFX, and more. That would've been a more risky move, though, and the reported $36 million price tag is well within reason. It keeps the film's likelihood of becoming profitable quite high.
How Much Five Nights At Freddy's 2 Needs To Make To Be A Box Office Success

Using the $36 million budget as a guide, Five Nights at Freddy's 2's break-even point should be around $90 million. While Hollywood movie accounting is murky, there is a general guideline that a film making 2.5x its budget at the box office is when it becomes a profitable hit.
That $90 million goal for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is one it should have no trouble achieving. It could endure a 70% drop from the first movie across the board and still be profitable, even if that massive drop would spell concerns about the franchise's longevity.
Luckily, box office projections for Five Nights at Freddy's 2's opening weekend are solid. It's targeting a $35M-$40M debut, which is about half of the $80M opening the original had. Considering the first film made $137 million stateside overall, the sequel should come close to making the $90M needed just at the domestic box office.
With international audiences also being a fan of this franchise, there's no reason to believe Five Nights at Freddy's 2 won't be a box office success. It's more a matter of determining how big of a hit it will be and if this franchise can strike lightning in a bottle twice.
