This movie is another prequel, following The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). This story follows the 50th Hunger Games, which was the event with Haymitch Abernathy involved.
Of course, Haymitch was the character Woody Harrelson played in the first Hunger Games trilogy. While the ending is not in doubt, the road there looks to be intense based on the trailer. It is also interesting to see Glenn Close in the trailer's opening, although it is hard to recognize the beloved actress for several reasons.
Glenn Close's Character In The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Explained
Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle at the reaping in Sunrise on the Reaping
Glenn Close is playing Drusilla Sickle in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, an escort for the District 12 tributes. For fans of the original movies, this is the role that Elizabeth Banks played as Effie Trinket. Not only is Drusilla in the film, but Effie is as well, as a young stylist played by Elle Fanning.
Much like Effie, Drusilla is in charge of escorting the tributes to the Hunger Games, preparing them to be introduced to the audience, and sending them into the event. Effie and Drusilla were also similar in the fact that they didn't seem to care about the tributes, only doing their jobs while putting on the show.
However, there is a big difference because, while Effie was mostly putting on a show and seemingly cared deep down, Drusilla is as evil as the rest of the people putting on the Hunger Games. She only cares about her appearance, and her primary concern is her reputation with the government in the Capitol.
Why Glenn Close Looks So Different In The Sunrise On The Reaping Trailer
Joseph Zada as Haymitch in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
This is a big reason that it is so hard to recognize Glenn Close in this role. Remember, when Effie first appeared in The Hunger Games, she was covered in makeup, jewelry, and wildly colored clothing. It was hard to recognize Elizabeth Banks at first, too, and it wasn't until later movies that she looked more like herself.
In The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Drusilla is worse than Effie ever was. She puts on the makeup and the big clothes, and even has people pushing her onto the stage to show her rank and dominance over those who work for her. Drusilla is playing a character to improve her own standing in the Capitol.
This will make Glenn Close a villain to root against in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, especially if her character is like the one from the novel, where she looks down on the tributes and shows she doesn't care if any of them live or die in the end.
