Try something different:
Show me the facts
Explain it like I’m 5
Give me a lighthearted recap
Here's a fun little festive treat for all the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gamers out there: PlayStation Plus will officially be free for all this weekend, giving you a chance to enjoy some of the perks of the subscription service without having to pay.
It's probably worth noting that free-to-play games like Fortnite or Where Winds Meet don't need PlayStation Plus, but if you want to access online multiplayer for games like Battlefield 6, you have to pay up. Usually, at least. Not this weekend1
PlayStation Plus Is Free For All This Weekend
The promotion runs from December 6 to December 7

This free PlayStation Plus weekend kicks off around midnight local time on Saturday, December 6, and runs until about one minute before midnight on Monday, December 8. Personally, I think it's a little stingy to not include Friday in this free weekend, but maybe I'm just being greedy.
Even without Friday included, you've got a full 48 hours to get stuck into games like ARC Raiders or Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 online without having to pay. Although, quite why you would have purchased either of those games without also intending to pay to play online is beyond me.
PlayStation typically runs these promotions two or three times a year, and it's nice to see them give us another one so close to Christmas. It pairs nicely with the extra large helping of free games we just got via PlayStation Plus Essential:
January 2026 Is The End Of An Era For PS Plus
Enjoy it while it lasts
Enjoy this act of kindness while you can, because January 2026 marks the end of an era for PlayStation Plus. In the new year, PlayStation Plus Essential is going to phase out PS4 games, focusing on PS5 titles moving forward.
“As many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles from the Monthly Games and Game Catalogue benefit, PlayStation Plus is also evolving with this trend and will focus on offering PS5 titles through the Monthly Games and Game Catalogue benefit starting January 2026."
It's a divisive move for sure, and while there are many PS5 gamers who believe it's high time we moved on from the PS4, this is a fundamental shift for PlayStation Plus that will leave some out in the cold. Still, free weekend! Who can turn their nose up at that?
