Raphinha was once again the star of the show as FC Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over an in-form Atletico Madrid team at the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday.

After going behind to an Alex Baena goal in the 19th minute, the Blaugrana bounced back strongly as Raphinha levelled things before second-half strikes from Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres sealed the comeback.

Following yet another influential performance after returning from injury, Raphinha was named the official MVP of the match.

Raphinha elated

Speaking to the media after the match, the Barcelona winger was elated at the spirit and attitude shown by the team to come out on top against Atletico Madrid.

“I think the important thing is to believe in the work. There are many matches where we can start losing. We have to be prepared. We’re working on it very well. This is the spirit we need to have to win matches like this,” he said.

Continuing, the 28-year-old Brazilian international added: “We might concede a goal, but we need to keep our heads to come back in a game like this. We knew how difficult this game would be and that we could end up like last year, with them scoring first.”

One of the most notable differences the team has experienced since Raphinha’s return is the improvement in the off-the-ball pressing from the front and the intensity with which the team does it, with the captain himself setting the example.

“I think the more we press high up the pitch, the closer we are to the opponent’s goal. That way we’ll have more chances to score goals,” noted Raphinha.

Regarding his physical condition, the former Leeds United star remarked: “I’m looking to get back to my best physical condition. I felt it today, a bit tired.

“I asked to be substituted because I couldn’t go on. Both Pedri and I have other high-quality players who can take our places.”

Concluding, Raphinha highlighted the importance of the win over Atletico in terms of the La Liga title race, saying:

“I think we’re gaining confidence game by game. We knew it was key for the league. These are three important points that can decide the league. If we keep picking up points game by game, everything will go much better.”
