Ipswich Witches' speedway promoter Chris Louis is to step down from the Premiership champions and put the club up for sale.

The Suffolk side lifted their fifth title in October but Louis, who was a rider when they won their previous championship in 1998, has announced - with a "heavy heart" - he is leaving.

"Every conversation that I have had to inform those people in the club of my decision, has been with a tear in my eye," he told the club website.

"They have all been so supportive and I consider each and every one a friend. I will be working tirelessly over the coming months to ensure I leave the club in safe hands."

Louis took over as the Witches' main promoter from his father, John, in 2019 - since when they have also won the Knockout Cup.

"Dad and I have put in 77 years between us, and it has been a privilege to continue the legacy - I want to thank every rider that has represented the Witches in my time, either riding with, or for me," he added.

The news of Ipswich being put up for sale comes just two months after fellow top-flight side Sheffield also announced they were looking for new owners.
