Led by powerhouse performers Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, the series follows a Chicago financial planner, Marty, as he gets wrapped in a money-laundering scheme for a Mexican cartel, and soon unravels his life, his family, and his own morals. The series, which went on to win four Primetime Emmys, reached an end in 2022 with its fourth and final season. But, in case Ozark fans are looking for a new show to tap into, the Thai Netflix crime series The Believers, which is about to premiere its second season on December 4, 2025, and has earned an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, could finally fill the void they've been missing. It's a different setting, tone and overall premise, but the escalating crimes and warped sense of morality definitely hit the Ozark sweet spot.
What Is 'The Believers' About?
The Believers, which first premiered last year on March 27, 2024, starts off with three friends and entrepreneurs, Win (Teeradon Supapunpinyo), Game (Pachara Chirathivat) and Dear (Achiraya Nitibhon). But when their tech startup gets hacked and fails, leading them to massive debt, the three of them come up with a risky idea. Together, they plot a scheme to renovate an old Buddhist temple called the Phummaram Temple, and use people's faith to make a profit and pay off their loan.
At first, temple renovation is just painting and organizing, but soon the three of them realize they need something bigger to make the temple a true money-making machine. Soon, they stumble upon a forest monk, Monk Dol (Patchai Pakdisusuk) and convince him to join their temple, and spread his message, on a temporary 3-month basis. Now with a young, naive monk onboard, the temple finally gets the attention they were looking for, and starts making money, leading the trio down a path of no return.

While Season 1 is all about establishing the trio's ruthless pursuit of wealth, Season 2 of the series promises to be "darker, sharper, and more emotionally charged than ever before," the director Wattanapong Wongwan told Netflix. In the new season, the trio will be pulled into the criminal activities of Ae (Donut-Manatsanun Phanlerdwongsakul), a powerful and corrupt local politician. With Ae's plan to transform Nong Khal Temple into a massive temple redevelopment, the trio will take part in a whole new “Mega Merit Project," one that involves even more money, power and, of course, crime. "These two worlds – religion and politics – share the same instruments of power used to sway people’s hearts,” Wongwan explained.
As fans of Season 1 of The Believers gear up for Season 2's premiere just a couple of days away, there's no better time than now to watch this underrated, fast-paced drama. With Thai society and religion at the forefront, the series, which made history as the first Southeast Asian Netflix Original series to be renewed for a second season, offers a unique glimpse into the dark secrets of religion and politics, while still being entertaining and nail-biting for viewers. And while the show is more modern and has a different premise to Ozark, it might be the criminal antics its fans have been looking for.
