DC's Snyderverse Could Return, But Only In Comic Book Form

Zack Snyder's DC Justice League continuity, more commonly known as the Snyderverse, can technically return parallel to the DCU under one condition.

Technically, Zack Snyder's Snyderverse DC continuity can still return, but not on the big or the small screen. While certain actors and characters transferred over to the DCU, the DC Extended Universe has officially come to a definitive end. Zack Snyder’s involvement concluded with the Snyder Cut of Justice League, which served as the final expression of his vision within the franchise.

Meanwhile, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe has firmly established itself as DC’s cinematic future, with interconnected live-action films, live-action television series, and animated projects all taking place within one unified continuity. Numerous DCU productions are already in production and many others are in active development. Still, there remains a remote possibility that Snyderverse fans may one day see Zack Snyder’s story conclude properly.

The Snyderverse Is Highly Unlikely To Return

The Snyderverse Officially Ended With Zack Snyder's Justice League

After Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom gave the DC Extended Universe its conclusion, Warner Bros. has fully committed to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe as the cinematic future of DC. The creation of DC Studios was specifically intended to streamline oversight. With resources now concentrated on the DCU and a curated slate of Elseworlds projects, maintaining a parallel Snyderverse would be a logistical nightmare that would contradict the studio’s unified strategy.

Compounding this is the near-total unavailability of the original cast. Ben Affleck has publicly stepped away from comic-book roles, Jason Momoa is already playing Lobo in the DCU, and Ezra Miller is on hiatus after his personal controversies. Amber Heard has retired from acting altogether. Henry Cavill is also unlikely to reprise his DC role after plans for his Superman return were unceremoniously canceled as soon as he announced them.

It was already a miracle that Zack Snyder’s Justice League was produced at all, as it required a unique convergence of conditions, including the pandemic affecting the industry, an unprecedented fan campaign, temporary gaps in Warner Bros.’ plans, and the availability of cast members. Even if something similar could happen today, Warner Bros. and DC Studios wouldn't green-light it. It would be easier for Sony to revive the Raimi or Webb Spider-Man franchises parallel to the MCU.

The Snyderverse May Only Be Able To Continue In Comic Book Form

It's Much Easier To Revisit Famous Franchises In Comic Format

Continuing the Snyderverse in comic book form bypasses nearly every obstacle that prevents a live-action revival. A comic continuation wouldn’t require actors to return, nor would it demand expensive productions, VFX budgets, or scheduling coordination. Zack Snyder could freely explore his intended arcs for each established character without studio constraints or contractual limitations. Each new comic issue or volume would let Snyder finish his saga exactly as he envisioned it, without compromising due to logistical, financial, or casting challenges.

This approach is a proven model for major franchises. Dynamite Entertainment’s 2025 Supernatural comic revisits an untold period in the Winchesters’ story. Marvel is also complementing Dan Trachtenberg's Predator: Badlands with multiple new comics expanding the Predator universe. Most notably, the highly acclaimed Smallville show received an extra season in comic book format, following Tom Welling's Clark Kent as a full-fledged Superman and the adventures of the Justice League, which included the introduction of Batman and Wonder Woman themselves.

The Snyderverse could follow a nearly identical blueprint to Smallville Season 11. As a series of comics, it could adapt Zack Snyder’s full five-film plan, explore the Knightmare timeline, and provide a complete resolution to his version of the Justice League's conflict with Darkseid. It could even branch into new stories to enrich Snyder’s mythos and give his universe an alternate ending to the DCEU's.

What The Snyderverse Needs In Order To Continue As A Comic

Zack Snyder's Snyderverse Comics Would Also Need Certain Permissions

The Snyderverse can only continue as a comic if DC and Warner Bros approve it. After all, DC owns the original characters and their iconography, and Warner Bros. owns the specific cinematic interpretations Zack Snyder created. A comic revival would therefore require a unified agreement between both entities that allows those film-specific characters and designs to transition into a new medium properly.

If the comic adapts the actors’ likenesses, DC would need separate agreements covering likeness rights and financial compensation for each performer, since those visual depictions are legally protected. Even the costume designers and creative departments behind the movies may require credit or licensing if their exact work is reproduced faithfully. The Snyderverse can technically return in a different format, but only through a carefully negotiated network of legal approvals ensuring every depiction is properly licensed.

An official Snyderverse comic would need to collaborate with professional artists capable of authentically translating Zack Snyder's cinematic visual language into sequential storytelling. The 2021 fan-made project The Dreamscapes of Justice League: A Motion Comic showed the risks of informal production when several panels were found to be traced from official DC art. An official continuation would avoid this by hiring top-tier DC pencillers, inkers, and colorists to craft original, fully professional artwork worthy of the Snyderverse.

A Comic Book Snyderverse Could Be Even Better Than Zack Snyder's Live-Action Justice League Sequels

Zack Snyder Would Have The Opportunity To Reconsider His Unmade Ideas

Throughout the years, Zack Snyder has shared his ideas for his canceled Justice League sequels. While ambitious, some of these concepts have been controversial. For instance, Batman fathering Lois Lane's child, Bruce Wayne sacrificing himself to save the world, and Superman raising Batman and Lois' boy to witness him become the next Batman are all ideas that would have divided audiences.

If the Snyderverse were to ever continue in a different format, Zack Snyder would receive the rare chance to refine his plans for the franchise's conclusion. A series of Snyderverse comics could honor the director's creative vision but also avoid souring readers' feelings for the DCEU's Justice League. An extended conflict that isn't bound to budget or availability would allow Snyder to craft an epic finale and a more fitting epilogue.
