Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum placed pressure on U.S. authorities and her own justice system on Tuesday, questioning why Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, the husband of former Mexican TV host Inés Gómez Mont, has not been deported or extradited from the United States despite facing serious criminal charges in Mexico.

Speaking during her morning press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum confirmed she will formally request that Ernestina Godoy, the acting chief of Mexico's Attorney General's Office, review the status of the case and accelerate efforts to bring Álvarez Puga back to Mexico to stand trial.

"Mexico is seeking his extradition. He is currently detained," Sheinbaum told reporters. She added that she wants clarification on whether Álvarez Puga is under criminal investigation in the U.S. or simply held for immigration violations. She repeated that her administration's priority is "zero impunity," including white-collar crimes, not only organized crime cases.

The fact that Álvarez Puga has not been deported, Sheinbaum noted, stands in contrast to how U.S. immigration law is normally applied to undocumented Mexican nationals. "We want to know why he has not been expelled like thousands of other Mexicans who are detained for immigration reasons," she said.

Who Are Inés Gómez Mont and Víctor Álvarez Puga?

For many U.S. readers, Gómez Mont may be best known for her fashion moment at Super Bowl XLII in 2008 when she wore a wedding dress and jokingly proposed to NFL quarterback Tom Brady. In Mexico and Latin America, she became a household name after hosting entertainment programs on Televisa and TV Azteca.

Her public image drastically changed in 2021 when she and her husband were accused of participating in a multimillion-dollar tax fraud and money laundering scheme involving shell companies, known in Mexico as "factureras." Prosecutors allege the couple diverted the equivalent of more than 150 million U.S. dollars in public funds.

Both fled Mexico and were considered fugitives for more than three years. Interpol issued a red notice to locate them in 190 countries. Their case became a symbol of elite corruption, wealth, and the ability to evade Mexican law enforcement.

Arrest in the U.S. and Next Steps

Álvarez Puga was detained in Florida earlier this year by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after allegedly violating immigration statutes. Gómez Mont reportedly remains under investigation but has not been publicly confirmed as detained.

Sheinbaum said she expects the Attorney General's Office to pursue the case fully once Mexico receives confirmation of Álvarez Puga's legal status from U.S. authorities.

"It is essential that these crimes do not go unpunished," Sheinbaum said.

While the U.S. has not commented publicly, the case is now positioned to become a key test of international cooperation between Mexico and Washington over financial crimes, extradition, and the handling of high-profile fugitives.

Mexico, Sheinbaum emphasized, will not let the matter fade.
