Mark Wahlberg will continue being part of Netflix’s hugely successful operation for at least one more movie.
Having already made three films with the streaming giant, the star has signed on for The Operator, an action-thriller reportedly just acquired by Netflix after a bidding war (via Deadline).
The film is set to star Wahlberg as a former elite military operative (Delta Force or SEAL team member, perhaps) who now works as a cleaner for the CIA. His mission: to protect his most hated enemy. A game of cat-and-mouse ensues.
The script is by hot writer Harrison Query (Heads of State), who recently signed on to showrun the Netflix action series Trigger Point, starring Joel Edgerton. Query also just sold a short story to Amazon MGM Studios that will become a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Mark Wahlberg in The Union
Wahlberg’s run with Netflix kicked off in 2020 with Spenser Confidential, an action-comedy co-starring Alan Arkin in one of his final film roles. The movie was viewed by 85 million households in its first six weeks of release, the streamer later reported.
Critics were at best lukewarm, leading to a 37% Rotten Tomatoes score. A Spenser Confidential sequel was reported in 2020 to be entering development but there have been no further updates.
Wahlberg leaned even more into comedy for his next Netflix offering, pairing with fellow streaming king Kevin Hart for 2020’s Me Time. The buddy action movie was crushed by critics, and currently sports a 7% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
ScreenRant’s own Me Time review went relatively easy on the movie, admitting it was nothing special, but saying “it offers reliable laughs for anyone needing an escape from their own hectic reality.”
Halle Berry teamed with Wahlberg for his third Netflix endeavor, the 2024 globetrotting action movie The Union, a slightly better hit with critics than Me Time, as reflected in its 36% fresh score on RT.
Calling the movie “a far better rom-com than actioner,” ScreenRant’s review of The Union praised Wahlberg and Berry for their chemistry, but deemed the film’s action “a far cry” from the excitement of the John Wick series, and other similar fare.
Being one of Netflix’s main men hasn’t stopped Wahlberg from making movies for other streaming services. His current action-comedy The Family Plan 2 was made for Apple TV, while his previous 2025 offering Play Dirty was released by Prime Video.
In keeping with his stature as one of streaming’s biggest stars, Wahlberg has also lined up Weekend Warriors with Apple TV, and Balls Up with Amazon MGM Studios, for presumed release on Prime Video.
The Operator does not have a release date.
