Troll 2, the sequel to Netflix's epic sci-fi monster film Troll, has a promising Rotten Tomatoes score one day after its release. The first movie in the franchise debuted in 2022, with positive reviews from critics. Troll, which became Netflix's most-watched non-English movie, centers on a group of humans who set out to prevent a mountain troll from causing chaos.
Now, three years later, a sequel called Troll 2 has just been released on Netflix.
Troll 2 currently holds a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling the film a blast to watch. Not all critics have been as receptive to the sequel, with some saying Troll 2 suffers from sequelitis and doesn't justify its existence.
However, Troll 2's RT score is still above the minimum 60% threshold needed to be rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, so the film is showing some early promise, though it's way too early to tell if it will remain steady.
Since Troll 2 was just released on December 1, there aren't enough audience reviews yet for the film to receive a Popcornmeter score, but so far, fans have similar mixed-to-positive reactions as the critics do. While some viewers called Troll 2 amazing, others were disappointed.
By comparison, the first Troll movie has an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics (Tomatometer), with a 50% score from audiences. The Tomatometer score dropped 25 percentage points for the sequel.

Troll starred Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen and Gard B. Eidsvold, with Emily Goss, Kieran Regan, Austen Moret and Richard Cansino providing the English dub for the Norwegian-language film. All four actors returned for Troll 2, with Sara Khorami joining them as a brand-new character named Marion.
Roar Uthaug, who has directed films like Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander, The Wave and Cold Prey, returned to helm the sequel, with Espen Aukan back as screenwriter, and Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud resuming their roles as producers.
In Troll 2, the group, including Nora Tidemann (Wilmann), Andreas Isaksen (Falck) and Kris Holm (Pettersen), are forced back onto the front lines when a new troll awakens and runs amok.
The threat is larger and even more dangerous in this film, and the team has a finite amount of time to save the day before the troll's destruction becomes unbearable.
After Troll proved to be successful, a sequel was inevitable. Only time will tell if Troll 2 will be just as popular as the first film, but with Netflix's track record of monster movies, including the recently released Frankenstein, the streaming service just might have another hit on its hands.
