The animated sequel claimed the number four spot on the all-time list of the biggest openings in cinema history, behind only Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. A sequel to the billion-dollar-grossing Zootopia, which was released in theaters nearly a decade ago, Zootopia 2 made more than $550 million globally across its five-day debut. It was particularly successful in China, which has been rather cold on Hollywood movies in the last five years. Zootopia 2's opening was so massive that it has overtaken the lifetime hauls of several bona fide blockbusters.
In just five days of release in theaters worldwide, Zootopia 2 has generated more money than Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, and Alejandro G. Iñarittu's The Revenant. It has also surpassed the total lifetime haul of Michael Bay's Armageddon, which concluded its run with $554 million in 1998. Headlined by Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Landman star Billy Bob Thornton, Armageddon opened to mixed reviews, but is now considered a classic of '90s blockbuster cinema. The sci-fi film is now sitting at a 42% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Lovely to look at but about as intelligent as the asteroid that serves as the movie's antagonist, Armageddon slickly sums up the cinematic legacies of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay."
Disney's Comeback Is Poised To Continue
Curiously, Armageddon was produced for the same reported amount as Zootopia 2: $150 million. The new animated film brings back Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman in their voice roles and has opened to mostly positive reviews. Zootopia 2 is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 91% critics' score and a "verified hot" 96% audience score on RT. The website's consensus reads, "Cleverly layering a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, Zootopia 2 more than justifies a return trip to the big city." The movie ended a dry spell for Disney, and the studio's rebound is expected to continue with the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. You can watch Zootopia 2 in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
