Give me a lighthearted recap
It's been over two months since director Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another made its theatrical debut, and the film is still entertaining a small number of theatergoers. Sure, gone are the weekends when the critically acclaimed action flick was topping the box office charts, but, seeing as the film has now been available on PVOD for several weeks, to still be earning money from theatrical ticket sales is impressive on its own.
This past weekend, the film took home $66,000 from 62 theaters nationwide, even managing to outperform the likes of Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, which debuted much more recently and was available in more than double the number of U.S. theaters. Thanks to this $66,000, One Battle After Another has now surpassed one of the best sci-fi movies of this century, Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, in the global box office ranks, with the Amy Adams-led effort earning $202.109 million compared to One Battle After Another's $202.144 million. A synopsis for One Battle After Another reads:
"Bob is a washed-up revolutionary who lives in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited and self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis resurfaces and Willa goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her as both father and daughter battle the consequences of their pasts."
'One Battle After Another' Is an Oscar Favorite
With a 94% rating from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and widespread recognition as one of the year's best movies, One Battle After Another is unsurprisingly one of the favorites heading into the 2026 Academy Awards. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro, each of these names has been rumored for recognition in the Oscars acting categories, with the likes of DiCaprio and Penn feeling like certainties. Anderson is perhaps making his biggest bid yet to take home the directing trophy, with the film itself one of the front-runners for the coveted Best Picture prize.
For Collider, Ross Bonaime reviewed One Battle After Another, awarding it a perfect 10/10 and dubbing it a "generation-defining masterpiece." Bonaime said, "One Battle After Another is the type of film that only comes along a few times a generation, a masterfully crafted work that speaks to our present as a defining work of what it was like to live in our present era. Anderson does that with humor, tension, fear, and care, in a film that’s both one of the director's and 2025's best."
