The road to release of Hollow Knight: Silksong was long for the small independent studio Team Cherry, but now that it's in the hands of players and a round of post-launch tweaks have been made, the developers are looking toward new horizons. Acclaimed side-scrolling metroidvania Silksong nabbed a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards, but Team Cherry may skip the ceremony, citing their busy schedule and a prediction that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will take home the prize.
The Silksong devs seem largely unconcerned by the award and the award show itself, and have already turned some of their attention to Team Cherry's next project, which will "go elsewhere," they told Bloomberg. "We do have ideas around what forms those [games in Hollow Knight worlds] would take," Team Cherry co-director Ari Gibson said. "But we also don't want to be exclusively people that make Hollow Knight."
Will There Be A Hollow Knight 3?

Those who feverishly waited years for Silksong and are eagerly looking forward to more Hollow Knight might be disappointed, but Gibson makes it sound like more games in the series are something of an inevitability, that ideas are already fomenting. "If we were forced to make another Hollow Knight right now it'd be a joy," Gibson said. "It's just that it'd be interesting for us to explore the same things we're interested in but maybe in a slightly different genre, slightly different theme, and how that affects the stories we come up with."
But for now, the only Hollow Knight content on the way is Silksong DLC. "We might have some vague ideas [about when new Silksong content will release], but we're not set," Gibson said. He promises that "important news" will be communicated when it's ready, and that Team Cherry is "excited about what we're making." In classic Team Cherry fashion, the devs are cagey about DLC release timelines: "We'll start talking about it more soon," said other co-director William Pellen, "but maybe we won't mention a timeframe right now."
Team Cherry's Next Game Could Be A Surprise
Moving away from the Hollow Knight series (for now) leaves the door wide open for Team Cherry's next game. It sounds like ideas aren't yet fully formed, especially since the studio is still working on new Silksong content, but the team feels confident any future projects will appeal to existing fans. Gibson said Team Cherry's new, non-Hollow Knight games "will still be about exploring big worlds full of weird characters and giant bosses and whatnot."
Whether Team Cherry continues in the metroidvania genre remains to be seen. Despite all the success, the principal development team at the studio appears to still comprise just three people. Hollow Knight: Silksong's long development may have finally reached the finish line, but that doesn't mean its journey is yet over, and afterward, Team Cherry is moving on to something else.
