The Athletics are entering the 2025-2026 offseason with plans to change some of the roster. While some of the roster is set for the 2026 season, there are others who could be dealt this winter.

One of those players is former New York Yankees and New York Mets starting pitcher Luis Severino. Since coming to the Athletics, he's been a bit of a home disappointment. On the road, he's solid, but in Sacramento, he's struggled.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Athletics are trying to trade Severino before year two of his $67 million deal begins in 2026.

"The Athletics, who celebrated his arrival a year ago when they signed him to a three-year, $67 million contract, now could be cheering his departure." Nightengale writes. "... Could a change of scenery make a difference? The A's are trying to persuade teams to believe it."

One of the main reasons why the Athletics are looking to move on from Severino this offseason is the massive difference in his performance when pitching at home, in Sacramento, versus on the road.

Severino, in 15 home starts, had a 6.01 ERA with a 2-9 record. On the road, in 14 starts, his ERA was only 3.02, and he went 6-2. The Athletics starter has expressed his discontent with the field in Sacramento, and a trade is likely the best path forward for both parties.

What was once an exciting signing for the Athletics for 2025 turned out to be a mistake, thanks largely in part to Severino's struggles at home.

The former Mets and Yankees starter might not wind up with either of those former teams, as a new club is more likely to take a chance on the veteran starter set to make $22 million in 2026.
