Top 3 Netflix Horror Series Not Directed by Mike Flanagan

Mike Flanagan may be the biggest name in Netlfix horror, but there are plenty of other fantastic horror TV shows to stream on the service.

I've written several "best of" lists for horror TV shows, and invariably, all of Mike Flanagan's shows end up in the top 3 positions, so let's try something new and discuss the best Netflix horror shows that Flanagan didn't have a hand in. You've got to give it up for Flanagan; he knows how to make a horror show.

From The Haunting of Hill House to The Fall of the House of Usher, Mike Flanagan TV shows have dominated the horror section on Netflix for years. Don't get it twisted, this isn't a case of Netflix being beholden to Flanagan's whims and pushing his shows more than others; he's just really, really good at making horror series.

However, there are more horror TV shows on Netflix than just those that spring from Flanagan's brain. These series are far different in style and come from all over the world. Each of these three series is very different from the next and from Flanagan's, and they are absolutely worth checking out as soon as you finish up Midnight Mass.

Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities (2022)

Corpse in Graveyard Rats Cabinet of Curiosities episode

The eight-episode horror anthology TV show, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, is a horrific and delightful mismatch of self-contained stories that all feel different but are still operating within the gothic, grimy aesthetic that Del Toro is so well known for. Surprisingly, he doesn't direct a single episode.

Some episodes are based on stories from H.P. Lovecraft, Henry Kuttner, and E.M. Carroll, but there are a few original stories as well. Cabinet of Curiosities has demons trapped in books, alien parasites, cursed paintings, and much more. It's wildly creative and extremely gory.

There's a distinct lack of Lovecraft-style horror on TV or in movies, but Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities does its part to bring the mind-bending, violent, and incomprehensible horror of the author to life. Every episode offers something different but still feels like it's part of a whole, making for an anthology you need to keep watching.

Marianne (2019)

The 2019 French horror series, Marianne, stars Victoire Du Bois as Emma Larsimon, a best-selling horror author who announces she's done writing her horror books and even kills off her protagonist. After she does so, Marianne learns something disturbing: the mother of a childhood friend believes herself to be a character from Emma's books.

Madame Daugeron (Mireille Herbstmeyer) is convinced that she is Marianne, the witch and villain of Emma's stories. As the series goes on, it starts to feel less and less like Madame Daugeron is making things up. If you're looking for a truly scary horror series, then Marianne is the one for you.

Few other horror TV shows manage to create the sense of dread that Marianne evokes, and far fewer are able to keep that tense atmosphere tight for an entire eight-episode season. Marianne never takes its foot off the pedal, and though the series was canceled after one season, you'll still be satisfied with the conclusion.

South Korea's Kingdom is an epic horror series that is as exciting and scary as it is a fascinating look at an overlooked time period in real history. The series is set during the Joseon Dynasty, a few years after the Koreans thwarted Japanese invaders. In the wake of the Imjin War, there is a power vacuum.

Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) is the Crown Prince of Joseon (which is modern-day Korea) who leaves the throne to investigate a mysterious illness sweeping the countryside. In his absence, his scheming stepmother angles to place her own son on the throne. What Lee finds, however, is bigger than any kingdom.

Zombies are swarming out of the Korean countryside, and it doesn't take long before all sides of the political factions are overrun by the zombie horde. Kingdom is action-packed, brilliantly written, beautiful to look at, and often very scary. It's Netflix horror as good as any Mike Flanagan series.
