By Alice GibbsShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberA Georgia homeowner’s curious discovery has turned into an unexpected viral hit after she spotted an “inaccessible” window in her new house—then set out to find the other side.
Kat, who did not give her surname, moved in a few months ago. She first noticed the window from outside about a month after moving in. But when she went upstairs to find it from inside, it seemed to vanish.
“I noticed about a month or two in that there was a window that I hadn’t noticed before and when I went upstairs to look at it, it wasn’t there,” Kat told Newsweek. “I knew the room was there but the previous owner turned it into a closet for storage and the window was boarded up.”
...Kat posted about the mystery on TikTok in a video that now has more than 3 million views. Text over footage of the home’s exterior read: “When your house has a window that you can’t get to.”
A home in the Peach State for 2025 costs an average of $329,538, according to Zillow, and while Kat didn't disclose what she paid, she ended up getting more bang for her buck in the end.
In the caption, she explained: "There’s a window with curtains I can’t access. The room it should belong to is a storage closet with no windows… and the attic is completely boarded up. Very creepy."
The intrigue only grew as Kat documented her search for the window from the inside. She bought an endoscope, a small camera on a flexible cable, to locate it and drilled into the wall where she was finally able to pinpoint the window.
“I drilled a hole in the wall and finally found it,” she said. “Who knows what this room was originally used for, but the secret window is definitely real.”
Kat added that the discovery didn’t reveal any hidden valuables. “No antiques or hidden gold stashed away unfortunately,” she said. But she said that the experience had been “such a fun little adventure to uncover.”
...Internet Reacts
What Kat didn’t expect was the online reaction, and as she shared more of the window mystery, commenters were increasingly interested. Many even urged her to tear down the wall and fully reveal the window.
“It was around Halloween and I just thought it was the perfect spooky vibe to share,” Kat said. “I didn’t think much of it and it now has almost 3 million views which is insane. It sort of snowballed and now everyone wants me to tear down the wall to show them this window.”
For now, Kat is leaving the window as it is. “I do plan on opening it up eventually,” she said, “but when the budget allows.”
This is far from the first time a homeowner has been faced with a hidden surprise in their home—from a couple that found “secret rooms” under their floorboards to the man who found a “creepy room” in the basement.
