The first trailer for Mother Mary has been released, revealing Anne Hathaway as a pop star haunted by demons. The highly-anticipated A24 movie stars Hathaway as pop star Mother Mary, following her relationship with fashion designer Sam, portrayed by Michaela Cole. Now, A24 has released the full trailer for Mother Mary, which sees Hathaway's title character going to Cole's Sam for help in making a new outfit. However, the pair share a sordid history that seemed to involve Mary cutting Sam out of her life following her fame. The tension between the pair makes it unclear if Sam will really help her.
The trailer also teases how the movie is a musical, highlighting the musicians involved while also teasing a number of stage performances. Mother Mary marks Hathaway's first movie since The Idea of You, her positively-reviewed rom-com from Prime Video, where she co-starred alongside Nicholas Galitzine. This will be Cole's first theatrical role since playing Aneka in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Their characters' feud appears to be the central element of the story about to unfold in the film.
Cole also starred opposite Ian McKellen in the black comedy film The Christophers, which premiered at TIFF in 2025 but doesn't have a wide release date as of writing.
This also marks Lowery's first theatrical release in five years. The writer-director's last movie to be released in theaters was the acclaimed The Green Knight, a retelling of an Arthurian legend starring Dev Patel as Sir Gawain. It's also a far cry from Peter Pan & Wendy, a critically panned 2023 adaptation for Disney+ he wrote and directed.
Luckily, it appears Mother Mary is bringing him back to his roots, with a complex, mind-bending story. The trailer presents some striking visuals, such as Mary in a bathtub and Sam cutting fabric to make her dress. There's an ominous, oppressive tone that seeps into the trailer as it goes on, but it doesn't give away any potential plot points.
With Mother Mary offering a seemingly twisted, dramatic tale that's also filled with musical numbers, the film seems like a unique installment in Lowery's filmography. The same goes for Hathaway and Cole, whose opposing characters will be a central focus as the undoubtedly captivating events of the movie unfold. Even so, its direction remains a mystery for now.
Mother Mary arrives in theaters in April 2026.
