Frequent A24 filmmaker Alex Garland has a new movie coming up, this time attached as a producer. The studio has revealed that Garland will be producing Stages, a movie with sparse plot details so far, from Film4 and A24, with actress Sonoya Mizuno making her directorial debut. Stages is said to be inspired by Mizuno's own dance background.

Mizuno attended the Royal Ballet School in London and danced in several ballet companies after, but today she is making a name for herself as a film and television star. Mizuno made her on-screen debut in Garland's first A24 movie, Ex Machina, and went on to star in Crazy Rich Asians, Annihilation, La La Land, and House of the Dragon.

Garland has helmed multiple major A24 movies, the most recent notable titles being Warfare and Civil War. While the horror sequel that he wrote, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is coming up at Sony Pictures, it makes sense that he will continue to collaborate with A24, first on Stages and then likely on future projects.

Garland and Mizuno are repeat collaborators; Garland also created the FX on Hulu miniseries Devs, which Mizuno stars in. While speaking about this show and Garland to Deadline in 2020, Mizuno stated: "He's always open to people giving their ideas, he takes them on, and it feels like a very equal place." This now extends to her taking the director's chair.

In addition to Garland acting as producer, Stages is being produced by Peter Rice (Warfare, 28 Years Later), and Agile Films Myles Payne and Sam Ritzenberg (Femme). Garland may be pivoting to a different genre, but he is bringing with him several creatives he works well with, to hopefully produce a new hit A24 drama in Stages.

Meanwhile, Mizuno's career is still going strong, with her set to return for House of the Dragon season 3, releasing sometime next year after fellow Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres in January. Mizuno portrays Mysaria, an increasingly influential advisor to Emma D'Arcy's Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, amid a civil war for the Iron Throne.

Both established as talented Hollywood professionals, Alex Garland and Sonoya Mizuno's new movie will potentially provoke great interest among audiences. There is no set release date for the feature yet, but the two main creatives' upcoming schedules are not overwhelmed with new projects, meaning we could see Stages sometime in the next couple of years.
