LSU football's top assistant coach, defensive coordinator Blake Baker, interviewed for Tulane's open head coaching position, according to a report from NOLA.com's Geurry Smith. The interview was reported by Garland Gillen of FOX 8, too.

The news came the same day LSU introduced Lane Kiffin as the Tigers' new head coach. Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Kiffin intended to keep Baker on staff, and that very well could still be the case. But LSU will have competition for Baker's services.

The Tulane job opened when Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall accepted the head coaching position at Florida. Baker was immediately tabbed as a top candidate to fill Sumrall's shoes. Baker played his college ball at Tulane and is familiar with Louisiana after working at Louisiana Tech and two stints at LSU.

Baker's LSU defense was one of the best in the country this year. Per ESPN's SP+, the unit ranked No. 9 nationally. LSU's 2023 defense was one of the worst in SEC history in 2023 -- Baker arrived in 2024 and delivered immediate results.

There aren't many holes in Baker's resume. Given Tulane is his alma mater and the work he's done with LSU, Baker is a perfect fit in New Orleans. Losing Baker would be significant for LSU and would likely come with a few exits on the defensive side of the ball, but LSU has the momentum and resources to hire another top defensive coordinator.
