Although we’re just days away from the early Signing Day for the class of 2026, explosive junior receiver Trey Smith decided he was ready to pull the trigger.

Smith committed to Arizona on Monday and is a key in-state pickup for the Cats.

“I loved the atmosphere at Arizona,” Smith said. “After my first visit, I kept comparing every other school to how I felt when I was at Arizona and nothing could match it.

“The coaches made me feel comfortable from the start and I loved how their families were always around. It really felt like a true family environment. Every time I left campus, I found myself wanting to go back, and that’s when I knew it was different.”

“UA WR coach Bobby Wade was the lead recruiter for Smith.

“My relationship with the Arizona coaching staff was a major part of my decision,” Smith said. “They’re some of the most genuine coaches I’ve talked to. I never felt like just a number, they knew everything about me and even about my family.

“Coach Wade has been my main recruiter throughout the whole process and I looked forward to our conversations every week. They believed in me early and offered me before I even ran my track time last March and that meant a lot to me.”

Smith said location didn’t really play that big of a role in his decision.

“At first, I always assumed I’d leave home to play college ball,” Smith said. “Staying close wasn’t something I ever imagined myself doing.

“The more I visited and the more I thought about it, the idea of my whole family being able to come to a lot of games became really important to me. Being close to them ended up being a huge positive and something I’m excited about.”

As for the timing of his decision, Smith said he wasn’t planning to make an early decision but things just felt right.

“Honestly, before my recruiting really started, I never pictured myself as someone who would commit early,” Smith said. “I thought I’d enjoy the whole process and take my time.

“I didn’t expect to fall in love with a school this fast. Arizona was only my second offer, and ever since my visit last March, they became the standard for every other school. Once I knew it was the right fit, it just made sense to lock it in.”

Smith is one of the fastest players in the West Coast ’27 class. He clocked multiple sub 11.0-100m times as a sophomore with a season best 10.61 time and a 22.05-200m time.

In 11 games this season, he has 36 catches for 695 yards and three touchdowns and a 99 yard kickoff return for a score as well.
