Walt Currie, who coached the Brick Memorial High School football program to two NJSIAA sectional championships and five Shore Conference divisional championships, has resigned as the Mustangs' head coach after 19 seasons.
"After 19 years of giving everything I had to our beloved Mustang football program, it is time for to step down. I told the boys (players) this afternoon,'' Currie said Monday night in a Facebook post.

"I want to express my gratitude for all the support over the years and for trusting us with your sons,'' Currie said. "As a parent, I know how hard that it is. It has been an absolute honor to be your head coach. I have truly been blessed.''
Under Currie, who replaced Fred Sprengel as head coach, Brick Memorial went 116-86 with NJSIAA sectional championships in 2008 and this past season and Shore Conference divisional championships in 2010, 2015, 2017, 2023 and this past season.
The Mustangs' divisional titles in 2010 and 2023 were outright. They shared divisional titles in 2015 with Brick Township and Toms River North, 2017 with Central and this past season with Donovan Catholic.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementCurrie is the winningest coach in Brick Memorial's history. Among the players on his 2008 team was current Point Pleasant Borough head coach Brian Staub. Staub was the Mustangs' standout triple option quarterback that season.
This past season, led by standout senior quarterback Jason Lajara, senior middle linebacker Trey Tallmadge, senior wide receiver Nyzier Matthews and senior running back Na'zeer Whittaker, the Mustangs went 10-3, won the Central Group 4 championship with a 28-0 win over Middletown North and shared the Class A South championship with Donovan Catholic.
The win total tied the school record for a season set in 2005 and equaled in 2023.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPrior to moving to Brick Memorial, Currie was the offensive coordinator at Point Pleasant Borough from 2001-2006, anf an assistant coach at Toms River South and Toms River East. He was also the head baseball coach at Point Borough from 2002-2007 and an assistant baseball coach at Toms River East, his scholastic alma mater.
