The New York Giants decided to bench Abdul Carter in the first quarter of the Week 13 game against the New England Patriots, and now we know why.

According to the Richie O'Leary of The Knight Report, and as confirmed by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Carter was benched for missing all or part of a "team responsibility."

"Heard from a source that Giants EDGE Abdul Carter was late to a meeting AGAIN and is expected to be benched for a few, just like last game," O'Leary reported.

"Source: Giants Abdul Carter was benched again for missing all/part of a team responsibility, a league source tells me. That's twice in three games under interim head coach Mike Kafka," Dunleavy reported.

As Dunleavy points out, this is the second time this season that Carter has been disciplined.

Back in Week 11, Carter was benched for the opening series of the game against the Green Bay Packers for missing a walk-through.

It was reported that Carter had slept through the practice, but Carter later denied that was the case, although he did admit he missed the practice.

"My mistake was an honest mistake," Carter said to ESPN. "I own the fact that it was an honest mistake. I was getting treatment and I told Coach Kafka that, too. But to say I was sleeping at that time just wasn't true. And it also wasn't a trend. This was the only time it happened."

Carter's issues are now a trend, and it's a troubling one, to say the least. Good on the Giants for not letting it slide.

Whoever the Giants bring in for their next head coach has to get control of this situation.
