LSU hires Lane Kiffin: Contract details for Tigers' new head coach

The biggest domino in this year’s head coaching carousel fell Sunday morning. The biggest name in the cycle, Lane Kiffin, agreed to take the best job available -- LSU.

Kiffin has led Ole Miss through arguably the best six-year stretch in school history, posting a 55-19 record during that time. This span includes four 10-win seasons in the last five years, highlighted by the 11-win season he just completed on Saturday.

Kiffin took this impressive resume and secured the head coaching job at one of the best programs in the country. The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander first reported Kiffin’s contract details. Here is what he’ll be paid to be the next head coach of the LSU Tigers:

Kiffin’s new contract makes him the second-highest-paid coach in college football, just behind Georgia’s Kirby Smart, with a $91 million deal over seven years — averaging $13 million annually.

According to Alexander, Kiffin’s contract also includes an escalator that would make Kiffin the highest-paid coach in college football if he wins the National Championship.

When Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry stated that he wouldn’t let LSU fall into the same financial hole they did with Brian Kelly’s massive contract, many worried that he had taken the school out of consideration for Lane’s services. Instead, Lane and his agent likely got exactly what sort of deal they were aiming for.

It goes without saying, but this is a massive swing for the Tigers. Kiffin’s drama-filled past is certainly reason for concern, especially when you’re paying him nearly nine figures. However, Kiffin’s on-field resume is strong enough that it makes the juice worth the squeeze — for now.
