After the Los Angeles Rams lost a stunner to the underdog Carolina Panthers, Chicago found themselves thrust into the No. 1 seed in the NFC, where they now control their own destiny. The Bears have won five straight games, including nine of their last 10 contests, and sit at 9-3 after an 0-2 start. Head coach Ben Johnson has his team playing inspired, complementary football, where they've found ways to win games.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAhead of a pivotal divisional showdown against the Green Bay Packers, which will be for first place in the NFC North, Johnson was asked about Chicago's current seeding as the top team in the NFC. And, in what shouldn't come as a surprise, he was quick to brush away talks of the postseason.
"Doesn't mean anything," Johnson said. "There's five games left. We've got a long ways to go. We have not been guaranteed a spot in the tournament yet. We have to earn that right. And the only way you can earn that right is by finding a way to win the next game. That's where our sole focus is."
It's the perfect response from Johnson and mirrors the mindset and expectations inside the Bears locker room. While fans are enjoying Chicago's stance atop the conference for the first time since 2006 -- and rightfully so -- there are still five games left on the schedule. The Bears have to face the Packers (twice), Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.
