The San Francisco Giants are one club "seeking to upgrade at second base" this offseason, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo.

Three players split most of the duties at second, with Tyler Fitzgerald receiving 63 starts in a trio that included Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss.

However, the NL West club may seek more stability at the position this year, and a name to keep an eye on is Brandon Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays.

"The Rays have spent years pondering the possibility of trading second baseman Brandon Lowe," Rosenthal and Woo wrote. "Now, with Lowe set to earn $11.5 million in the final year of his contract, the possibility might finally become real."

Lowe could bring an offensive boost to the Giants' lineup. He hit .256/.307/.477 with 31 home runs and a .785 OPS in 134 games last season with the Rays. Fitzgerald, Schmitt, and Koss combined to hit 19 homers.

Why this trade makes sense for both teams

Lowe hits free agency at the conclusion of the 2026 season. While he's had some trouble staying healthy throughout his career, he is a reliable bat when on the field.

The Giants could use another power hitter to pair with Rafael Devers, and the Rays might look to deal Lowe if they are out of the postseason race come the trade deadline.

Last month, the Rays cut ties with closer Pete Fairbanks, declining his $11 million option for 2026. That move was a clear indication they wanted to shed salary, and they may take the same route with Lowe through a trade.
