The next major theatrical release for the DC Universe will be the Supergirl movie, featuring Milly Alcock as the latest incarnation of the Girl of Steel. After making a cameo in Superman back in the summer, 2026 will finally have Kara Zor-El's major adventure in the DCU's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters."
In a recent report from Forbes, the outlet disclosed new details on the Supergirl film, specifically the project's budget. According to Forbes, the DCU entry had a budget of $200 million. In comparison to the Superman budget, the David Corenswet-starring film had a reported production cost of a net $225 million, after tax and incentives breaks. James Gunn's 2025 film grossed $616 million and became the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl was written by Ana Nogueira, with the film being based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series. The Supergirl cast finished principal photography on the project back on May 10, 2025.
In the same feature with Forbes, Alcock opened up about landing the leading role in the Supergirl movie. According to the Australian actress, “I thought, ‘What have I done?’ I really struggled to believe I could do it. I even called the director saying, ‘I don’t know how to be that person. I’m just me.’"
The young star elaborated that she “eventually realized the only way through was to trust myself." Alcock also stated, “I always believe life is right on time. Things happen when they’re supposed to, whether you feel ready or not.”
The Girl of Steel will not be the only DCU outing for DC Studios in 2026, as Clayface will debut on September 11. Other films that are in the works for Gunn's franchise are Man of Tomorrow, which will begin production next year, serving as a follow-up to Superman.
Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
