When The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, it became the cultural reset Star Wars desperately needed — a stripped-down, mythic western anchored by Pedro Pascal and an instantly iconic little alien that the world still insists on calling Baby Yoda. But after three seasons, a spinoff detour in The Book of Boba Fett, and declining viewership, fans have spent years asking the same question: Is Season 4 still happening? Jon Favreau has finally answered — and it’s might not be the news fans are wanting.

In a new interview with Empire, Favreau confirmed that he did write Season 4 of The Mandalorian… but the series, at least in episodic form, appears to be over.

“We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here. [The story] is structured about a movie structure, as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there's a larger throw to the whole thing.”

That last part is the key. Instead of debuting on Disney+, Mando and Grogu’s next adventure will hit theaters as The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release on May 22, 2026, starring Pascal, Jeremy Allen White, and Sigourney Weaver.

Why Is 'The Mandalorian' Not As Good?

When Season 1 debuted, The Mandalorian felt like a breath of fresh air — standalone adventures, clear emotional stakes, a small-but-mighty character journey. But as Disney expanded its streaming footprint, the show became the gravitational center of an interconnected TV universe, and that’s where things got messy.

Episodes of The Book of Boba Fett became mandatory viewing for fans wanting to understand why Din and Grogu reconciled. Ahsoka leaned deep into Rebels lore, the stakes of the franchise ballooned, but the audience didn’t. Viewership for The Mandalorian Season 3 dropped sharply. Ahsoka struggled to sustain numbers. The Acolyte couldn’t break through and was cruelly cut down in its prime. Fans were overwhelmed, but casual viewers tuned out because the homework list kept getting longer. Now Disney is betting that audience will show up in theaters.

But will it be enough? That's the question. This isn’t a new story that welcomes newcomers. It’s a continuation — structured, as Favreau said, like the series’ unwritten Season 4, so you're gonna need to know Din and Grogu's history, plus who the likes of Bo-Katan Kryze are off the bat. It's a big challenge.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026.
