Disney just delivered the kind of Thanksgiving miracle studio executives dream about. Zootopia 2 thundered into theaters with a massive $556 million global debut, instantly joining the ranks of the biggest opening weekends of all time — animated or otherwise. That number puts the sequel fourth in global box office history, behind only Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. All three of those films soared past the $1.9–$2 billion mark by the end of their runs, placing Zootopia 2 in truly elite company out of the gate.
The breakdown is astonishing:
- $400 million from international markets
- $156 million from North America
- New records for largest global animated opening, largest international animated opening, and biggest worldwide start of 2025
If there’s one territory that turnedZootopia 2into a phenomenon, it’sChina. The sequel earned a jaw-dropping$272 millionsince Wednesday, instantly becoming:
- the biggest non-local animated opening ever,
- the second-biggest non-local debut of all time after Avengers: Endgame, and
- the sixth-largest opening in Chinese box office history, including local films.
Incredibly, within just five days, Zootopia 2 has already outgrossed the entire Chinese run of the first Zootopia ($236 million). The franchise’s popularity has exploded in the region since the opening of Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland, which has supercharged fan engagement.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the sequel reunites rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and fox-turned-con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they face a mysterious new reptilian resident played by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan.
Is 'Zootopia 2' Worth Seeing?
That's the most important thing. Word of mouth is going to keep the movie performing all through the holiday period, and it's a lock to pass the billion dollar mark — very quickly too. But it wouldn't matter if the movie wasn't worth watching. So is it? Absolutely. Collider's Therese Lacson labelled it a "strong sequel" in an 8/10 review:
For adults, Zootopia 2 offers the same funny puns and references as the first movie — complete with a former-movie-actor-turned-mayor stallion named Brian Winddancer (Patrick Warburton) and the return of Vito Corleone, aka Mr. Big (Maurice LaMarche). For kids, it's a colorful and delightful movie that delivers both thrills and heart. A fantastic follow-up to the original, Zootopia 2 swoops in right at the perfect time for the holidays as a perfect family movie to enjoy.
