A huge Marvel Cinematic Universe movie could have had a very different filmmaker had things played out differently in Phase 4. The Multiverse Saga is nearing its end, following several films and TV shows since 2021.

During her appearance on The Town with Matthew Belloni, Chloe Zhao revealed that Eternals was not the first MCU film she had initially been contacted about. Zhao explained, "I went in at first for Black Widow, and then there was a scheduling conflict."

She elaborated by sharing how "when Nate Moore, my producer for Eternals, showed me the treatment, I went, ‘Oh, wow. I get to have all these immortals, like a Greek play, to discuss humanity. And then I get to create monsters and space gods, right?’" While she admitted that "it probably should have scared me," Zhao admitted that she "tend to jump before I know how to swim.”

For those 10 years when I was going around America and learning new ways of life and having a relationship with nature, there was something bubbling inside really intensely. The volcano reference erupted, and that was in the form of Eternals. Because Eternals, at its heart, is a story about a pantheon of gods having discussions about the nature of humanity.

In the end, Cate Shortland directed the Black Widow movie, which brought in key characters like Yelena Belova and Red Guardian into the MCU. The film grossed $379.7 million at the worldwide box office, with $183.6 million coming from the domestic market, while raising $196.1 million internationally.

Following the Eternals movie, none of the key players have been back in the MCU timeline since then, and it still remains unclear if Marvel Studios has any plans for those characters. Phase 6 is underway, and it only has a few projects left before finishing The Multiverse Saga in December 2027.

The films where they could have any involvement are Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, given how the entire MCU will be affected by the arrival of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. The franchise will also be going through a reset before Phase 7, which could play a factor in whether or not the Eternals players are ever seen again.

Black Widow and Eternals are both available through home media release and on streaming.
