Dec. 1—Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey scored three unanswered special teams goals to win the third-place game 5-2 over St. Scholastica at the Superior Showdown on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Wessman Arena in Superior.

The Saints erased a 2-0 first-period UWS lead by the halfway point of the game, but Carson Riddle put UWS in front with a power-play goal with 4:31 left in the period. Daniel Roszival scored shorthanded and Chris Ishmael with the man advantage in the third.

Kobe Grant made 27 saves for UWS.

The Yellowjackets were shunted into the consolation game after 31 shots yielded only one goal in a 4-1 loss to Dubuque on Friday night.

The Yellowjackets put 20 shots on UD goalie Dazza Mitchell with nothing to show for it through 40 minutes, and by the time Roszival broke through with just under seven minutes to play, the visitors were up 3-0.

Nikita Borodayenko had a goal and three assists for Dubuque.

Jan Skorpik made 18 saves for UWS.

UWS (4-3-1) now picks up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in earnest, starting with a Friday home game against Wisconsin-River Falls.

Significant defensive improvement only led to a longer day for the UWS women's hockey team, which ended a nonconference series at St. Norbert on Sunday with a 1-0 overtime loss in De Pere, Wisconsin.

UWS goalie Jayda Moyer stopped 38 shots, 19 of them in the first period, but her SNC counterpart, Tanith Plachetka, was equal to all 23 shots she faced over 60 minutes.

Tristan Wicklund won it for the Green Knights at the 1:42 mark of overtime.

In Saturday's series opener, a Grace Wittkopf hat trick propelled the Green Knights to a 6-3 win over UWS.

Anna Scherling and Kendal Gustavsson (Hibbing/Chisholm) scored equalizing goals to make it 1-1 and 2-2, but Wittkopf's second and third were part of a three-goal run late in the second period that made it 5-2 SNC after 40 minutes of play.

Avery Olenik added a consolation goal for UWS and Moyer made 27 saves.

UWS (1-7) has a single game this week, its first WIAC home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6, vs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Wisconsin-Superior led by 18 early on and by double digits in the opening minutes of the second half but came away with its sixth-straight defeat to open the 2025-26 season, 68-65 vs. Loras in a nonconference game at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

The Yellowjackets were up 36-29 at halftime and started the second period on an 8-2 run, leading 44-31 when Caiden Lecce drained a 3-pointer 3:48 into the half. However, the Duhawks outscored the Yellowjackets 15-4 over the next 5 1/2 minutes to get back into the game and took their first lead of the half with 7:07 left by way of an 11-0 run.

Loras made enough free throws down the stretch to maintain its lead, and after two makes with three seconds to go, UWS could not get a tying 3-pointer off at the buzzer.

Lecce led all scorers with 21 points, while Evan Bennett added 10, but the Yellowjackets struggled to 24 turnovers.

UWS will travel to face Wisconsin-Stout on Wednesday in Menomonie, Wisconsin.
