A forecast map shows which states could see the most snow, with a winter storm set to move into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast starting Monday evening, bringing the risk of snow and ice across the interior portions of both regions.

According to a Sunday update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center (WPC), a low pressure system is expected to develop along the Gulf Coast late on Monday, moving through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Tuesday, then departing via Canada.

The agency said that while there was some “uncertainty” about exact snow and ice amounts, the risk of major accumulations across much of the interior Northeast was growing.

More than six inches of snow is possible north and west of I-95 in the northern Mid-Atlantic and New England, the WPC said. Hazardous icing is also expected in parts of the southern and central Appalachians, it added.

Winter storm watches—which the NWS issues “when there is the potential for significant and hazardous winter weather within 48 hours”—span parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine as of early Monday, with the agency warning of potential heavy snow and difficult travel.

The NWS forecast office in Gray, Maine said in a post on X, Saturday: “An active stretch of weather is expected over the next week. A quick hitting disturbance on Sunday will bring accumulating snow north of the mountains, with mostly rain elsewhere. More snow is likely on Tuesday and could be the first widespread winter weather event this season.”

NWS Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania said on X, Monday: “A Winter Weather Advisory currently spans from Arkansas to New York, including our entire forecast area, for a winter storm that will cross our area tonight and Tuesday.”

NWS Burlington, Vermont said on X on Monday: “A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for parts of central and southern Vermont from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday. Difficult travel conditions may be possible on Tuesday, especially during the morning and evening commutes.”
