Iowa wrestling (5-2) fell to No. 6 Iowa State (2-0) during a star-studded clash in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series by a final score of 20-13 from Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, on Sunday, after the third-ranked Hawkeyes' comeback efforts came up short.

During the meet, the Cyclones won six of 10 matches and scored bonus points in two of those bouts, compared to Iowa’s one bonus point earned through their four match victories.

The dual meet opened with the 285-pound classification bout as No. 1 Yonger Bastida (Iowa State) earned an 11-4 decision over No. 6 Ben Kueter (Iowa). Significant at the time, Kueter escaped late in the third period to prevent bonus points.

In a rematch from last year’s NCAA tournament bout, No. 7 Dean Peterson defeated Iowa State's No. 9 Stevo Poulin at the 125-pound class by a 4-2 score.

At 133, the Cyclones jumped out to a significant lead as Iowa State's No. 6 Evan Frost upset No. 3 Drake Ayala, 11-5, before No. 6 Anthony Echemendia scored a major decision over No. 7 Nasir Bailey, 15-2.

No. 10 Ryder Block sent the dual to the break with an upset over No. 2 Paniro Johnson in tiebreakers, 2-1. Block's escape in three seconds to secure the win during the sudden victory period allowed the Hawkeyes to close the gap to 10-6 at the break.

No. 3 Vinny Zerban added bonus points for Iowa State at 157, defeating No. 12 Jordan Williams via major decision, 11-3.

Second-ranked Michael Caliendo used six takedowns in the 165 bout to record a technical fall, defeating ISU's No. 22 Connor Euton, 20-5.

No. 1 Angelo Ferrari was able to edge Cyclones' No. 10 Issac Dean in the 197 class by a 2-1 decision. However, the dual would come to a close after ISU's No. 2-ranked Rocky Elam claimed an 8-2 decision over No. 4 Massoma Endene.

“I look at it like we have work to do,” head coach Tom Brands said. “We will keep doing the work. I’m not sure that we failed in critical moments. I think that we can get better, and we have the guys to get better.”

Iowa will look to rebound in the Journeymen Wrestling "Uncivil War" on Dec. 12 from Hannibal High School in Hannibal, Mo., when the Hawkeyes take on Chattanooga and Utah State.
