“Madrid is a Team in Regression”

On RadioEstadio Noche (Onda Cero), Santiago Segurola delivered a blunt assessment of Real Madrid’s ongoing slide after a third consecutive league draw. The five-point cushion at the top of La Liga is gone, and Segurola argues the issues are structural, not episodic.

“Madrid lacks intelligence on the pitch… they’ve opted for a more physical, more athletic style of football, with signings in midfield of that type,” Segurola said.

For Segurola, the club’s missteps in the summer window set the stage for today’s problems. “Real Madrid is a bewildered team, in regression; it was known that a midfielder was missing and no one was signed. They signed players in every position except that type of player they needed.”

The squad lacks balance and profiles that mesh well. Many feel the same as Segurola: the lack of clarity in the most important zone of the pitch — the midfield — is telling after years of Kroos and Modric.
