One of the biggest names in the industry, Taylor Sheridan has amassed hit after hit and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. With his fan-favorite series, Yellowstone, now becoming its own universe with sequels and prequels popping out from every nook and cranny, he’s gone on to branch out in other directions through titles like Lionness, Tulsa King, and Landman — each of which has risen to immense popularity. But, what kind of content does a man like Sheridan like to unwind with at the end of the day? What’s his favorite genre or film that has inspired him in his wildly fruitful career? Thanks to a Rotten Tomatoes interview from a few years back, we know the answer to that burning question and one of those films — Oliver Stone’s Platoon — will soon draw in new eyes when it arrives on Prime Video December 1.

When recounting the movies that made him the creative that he’s become, Sheridan credited Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, Norman Jewison’s In the Heat of the Night, Michael Mann’s The Insider, Robert Benton’s Kramer vs. Kramer, and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather as his top choices. Bending the rules, he tossed in a sixth movie to the ranking, adding Stone’s gut-wrenching and heartbreaking Vietnam War film to the lineup, explaining,

“Platoon, I think I was 15 or 16 when I saw that movie in the theater. I was so riveted by it, and the experience around it. I remember when I saw that movie, this is when there was still lines to get in the next one. The movie hadn’t come out yet, and we’re all standing in a line, 400 people to go in, and when the door opened, it was all these Vietnam Vets in their gear, grown men, crying and holding hands and arms around each other. When I sat down, I had no idea what I was about to see. Again, it was a deconstruction of the war film, the antithesis of John Wayne’s The Green Berets.”

Who Stars in ‘Platoon’?

Based on his own experience as a soldier forced to serve in the Vietnam War, Stone’s gritty drama follows a U.S. Army volunteer played by Charlie Sheen as he rides out the worst days of the bloodshed and attempts to make it home alive. Along with Sheen, the cast was packed with a dynamite lineup of performers that also included Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp, Kevin Dillon, Keith David, Forest Whitaker, and John C. McGinley.

Head over to Prime Video on December 1 to stream Platoon and see why it made Sheridan’s cut of favorite films.
