Four years after the first movie hit theaters, Dwayne Johnson just gave a devastating new update about Disney's Jungle Cruise 2. Other Disney theme park rides, like The Haunted Mansion and, most notably, Pirates of the Caribbean, have been turned into movies. Jungle Cruise received the film treatment in 2021 with stars Johnson and Emily Blunt in the lead roles.
Over the past few years, Disney started developing a sequel to Jungle Cruise. However, Johnson just revealed that those plans are no longer in motion. The actor explained to EW that as Disney was shifting out of the COVID-19 pandemic, new leadership was installed at the company, and their priorities have now changed.
According to Johnson, Disney realized that they don't need to "revisit it again."
"I don't think so. I think when Disney came under new leadership, they just shifted coming out of COVID. COVID shifted our business in a lot of ways. I think they looked at that property and thought, we did it once, not sure if we should revisit it again. Despite whether or not our chemistry was great.
Blunt added that she and Johnson have come to terms with the fact that Disney ultimately didn't want to make Jungle Cruise 2, despite how great their chemistry was on-screen. "That's fine," she said.
They did not want to set sail again, and that's fine.
Bob Chapek was the CEO at the time that Jungle Cruise was released in theaters, but now Bob Iger is back to make a course correction with the company before he hands it off to a new successor.
The COVID-19 pandemic played a major role in the rollout of Jungle Cruise. After being scheduled for July 2020, the pandemic forced Disney to delay the film until July 2021. The caveat is that Jungle Cruise was released on Disney+ with Premier Access simultaneously with the theatrical release.
The Premiere Access feature, which was an extra cost on top of a Disney+ subscription, was added to the streaming service when Disney wasn't able to release movies in theaters due to the pandemic. Other movies released with Premiere Access included the live-action Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella and Black Widow.
Despite moviegoers having the option to watch it at home, Jungle Cruise still managed to gross $220.9 million at the box office. The film was received well by fans (receiving a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), though critics weren't as receptive, giving the Johnson and Blunt flick a 62% score.
Despite having to navigate various obstacles like the pandemic, it seemed inevitable that a sequel would be greenlit. Johnson, a producer on the film, and Blunt had reportedly signed on to Jungle Cruise 2, with Jaume Collet-Serra as director and Michael Green as screenwriter. As recently as fall 2022, it was revealed that Green was working on the script.
Now five years have passed since that major update, with Johnson and Blunt revealing that plans have stalled due to new leadership. It's possible that Disney couldn't guarantee Jungle Cruise 2 would be a box office hit, considering the first film's pandemic-related circumstances. No matter what led to Disney's decision, Jungle Cruise 2 is dead.
Fortunately for fans of Johnson, his relationship with Disney is still going strong, despite the disappointing news about Jungle Cruise 2. Zootopia 2 hits screens on November 26, and a live-action remake of Moana will be released in July 2026. The same goes for Blunt, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 will finally arrive in May 2026.
