Reacher has delivered considerable success for Prime Video thus far. On Rotten Tomatoes, Big Alan's first three seasons all sit above 90% - an impressive feat for any TV series. The reaction to Ritchson's portrayal has been overwhelmingly positive when compared to Tom Cruise's big screen version, and Reacher season 3 also set Prime Video's viewership record for a returning season.
Each season of Reacher has shared the same foundational elements - Reacher's painful lack of social subtlety, thrilling action blended with mystery, assistance from Maria Sten's Neagley, etc. At the same time, Reacher keeps finding new avenues to explore. Season 1 was a small-town conspiracy, season 2 was straight-up vigilantism, and season 3 saw Reacher going undercover. Reacher season 4, however, might be the most unique yet.
Reacher Season 4 Will Be A Different Type Of Story
Each of Reacher's three seasons so far has given the title character a very direct and personal connection to the case at hand. In season 1, Reacher was investigating the death of his brother. In season 2, it was several old Special Investigator pals being murdered. In season 3, Reacher was seeking vengeance for Dominique Kohl. Every single time, Ritchson's character was driven by the loss of someone close to his heart.
If Reacher season 4 faithfully follows Gone Tomorrow, the Lee Child book it's based on, it'll be the first case with no direct ties to Jack Reacher's own history. Instead, the story will begin spontaneously, with Prime Video's towering hero simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Reacher can't help but get involved when he senses something amiss, and he only falls deeper down the rabbit hole from there, refusing to let the mystery go until it's solved.
It's a change of pace from Reacher's existing formula. Rather than being motivated by his family or military past, season 4 will show Jack Reacher propelled by a sense of justice and a nagging feeling of guilt over potentially causing a woman's death. That death, however, still only happens within the confines of Gone Tomorrow's plot.
Reacher Season 4's Less Personal Story Is A Positive Change For The Series

There was always a limit on how many times Prime Video's Reacher could kill a friend or family member as a way to kickstart a season, so something had to give in season 4, just to avoid a repetition problem. After a brother and five colleagues, knowing Jack Reacher already feels suspiciously like an occupational hazard. One more might've lost Reacher some credibility.
More importantly, Reacher season 4 will bring the character's innate sense of justice to the fore stronger than ever before. The need to do the ethical thing and follow his own sense of right and wrong has always been part of Ritchson's portrayal, as seen in his treatment of the dog in season 1 and with the bullies targeting Richard in season 3.
Jack Reacher has gone to hell and back three times now, putting his life on the line in the name of lost loved ones. In season 4, we'll see Reacher going to hell and back and putting his life on the line simply because someone needs to, and when nobody else is willing to step up, Jack Reacher obliges. Alan Ritchson will have the opportunity to explore a new facet of Lee Child's creation, and with that new slant, Reacher season 4 could be Prime Video's best yet.
