It is now just over one year away until Marvel fans can watch Channing Tatum reprise his role as Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine in the star-studded, and sure-fire box office smash, Avengers: Doomsday. Expected to be one of the defining film events of the decade so far, Doomsday brings together one of the most exciting ensembles ever put to screen. However, before the inevitable success of this next MCU project, another new Tatum movie is proving triumphant on the iTunes charts.
A favorite coming out of this year's Toronto International Film Festival, Roofman, directed by A Place Beyond the Pines' Derek Cianfrance, is a fast-paced comedy drama based on the true story of spree robber Jeffrey Manchester. Following a mediocre box office performance, Roofman has finally hit the success its quality deserves, becoming one of the most-watched movies on iTunes at the time of writing. Released during an underwhelming period across the board at the box office, Roofman was one of many victims this October, earning just $28 million from a reported budget of $18 million. For those yet to see Roofman, a synopsis for the movie reads:
"Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum), an Army veteran and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys "R" Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in."
'Roofman' Is Channing Tatum's "Career-Best Role"
In a career full of ups and downs from at least 60 on-screen performances, it's tough to pick a favorite of Tatum's. However, for Collider's Tania Hussain, that title goes to his starring role in Roofman, which she called his "career-best" in her review.
"In a career-best performance, Tatum is extraordinary. He not only lives and breathes the role, complete with a physical transformation and balance of melancholy with optimism, but moves through Jeff’s life with dancer-like precision, giving his character the exact mix of charm and sadness that’s impossible to shake. It’s a performance that redefines his career with deeper layers that are raw, funny, and heartbreaking."
Roofman is an iTunes hit. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
