Unfortunately, because of the San Francisco 49ers’ injuries on the defensive side of the football, the unit hasn't played as well as many expected entering the season.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementStill, the 49ers haven't been bad on defense, but their inability to get to the quarterback at times has been glaring, and much of that is due to injuries to Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams.
As the 49ers search for ways to improve their pass rush moving forward, even with both of those players in their plans, there's reason to believe they could be in the market for someone due to Brandon Aiyuk's contract being in a strange spot, which could give the 49ers some more flexibility than they were expecting to have.
When examining what that could mean, Peter Panacy of Niner Noise recently suggested that Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals could be a player in line to come to San Francisco.
“Granted, going after a prime veteran free-agent pass-rusher like the Cincinnati Bengals' Trey Hendrickson wouldn't jive with San Francisco's recent approach of getting both younger and cheaper.

Both Bosa and Williams remain in the Niners' long-term plans, yes. But the opportunity to target a player like Hendrickson, who registered back-to-back 17.5-sack campaigns in 2023 and 2024, might simply be too good to pass up,” he wrote.
Hendrickson has been looking for a massive contract, and got paid for a one-year deal with the Bengals, but he'd be very expensive if the 49ers were to sign him on the free-agent market. That might be something they have to consider here.
