Harald Østberg Amundsen claimed victory in a 20 kilometres cross-country mass start ski race as fellow Norwegian Johannes Høsflot Klæbo missed a 100th career World Cup victory on Sunday in Finland.

Amundsen made his move at the last short uphill from a five-man leader group in the freestyle race in Ruka, which he also won last year.

Jonna Sundling decided the women's race in the same way, but a men's Nordic combined mass start event could not be completed and was cancelled - just like the men's large hill ski jumping - due to high winds in Ruka.

The women could meanwhile jump at the Swedish venue of Falun where Nika Prevc of Slovenia ended the perfect start to the season of Japan's Nozomi Maruyama.

Amundsen wins, Klæbo trails

Amundsen overcame a broken pole as he clinched his 12th career victory, 1.9 seconds ahead of team-mate Einar Hedegart. Sweden's Edvin Anger completed the podium in third, 2.3 seconds off the pace.

Multiple world, Olympic and World Cup champion Klæbo had to settle for 15th as he failed to reach the 100 mark on his first attempt the day after topping the Ruka sprint.

"I don't know, it just didn't work. (I will) just go home now," he said.

His next chance will come from Friday onwards at home races in Trondheim, where he made history by sweeping all six golds at the world championships this year.

Sundling beats Diggins

Sweden's Sundling broke a seven-strong top group in the women's race to claim her 13th career success, 2.3 seconds ahead of defending World Cup champion Jessica Diggins of the United States and 2.8 clear of Norway's Heidi Weng.

Diggins, who is competing in her last season, tried to attack at the last climb but was trapped behind Swede Frida Karlsson as Sundling stormed ahead on the other side of the slope. However, second place was good enough for Diggins to claim the World Cup lead.

Prevc beats Maruyama

In ski jumping, double world and World Cup champion Prevc soared 125 and a hill record 132 metres for a 23rd career success as she ended the reign of Maruyama, who had won the first three events of the season.

Maruyama had to settle for second with 122.5m and 129m. Norway's Eirin Maria Kvandal was third.

“I feel really happy about my jumps today. Those were the best of the season yet. Maybe I just woke up, but I think from the first jump I had confidence and hill records, that’s what I like the most," Prevc told FIS.
